An enormous amount of care goes into an annual report — the writing, the design, the argument it builds about a year. Almost all of it is spent on a document most people never finish. The organization behind this one did not want to strip that work back to a summary. They wanted the report to keep its form and still answer the one question each reader arrived with.

The challenge

The report was put together with care and then barely used. The people who needed something from it — journalists, employees, investors, regulators — each arrived with a different question, and finding the answer meant knowing how the document was organized and which words its authors had chosen. Anyone without that vocabulary gave up early.

The usual fix makes it worse. Cutting the report down, or bolting a chat window onto the side of it, throws away the reason it was made well in the first place: the structure, the tone, the design that carries the argument.

The outcome

The report is still the report. What changed is the layer over it: an optional companion the reader can turn on, which takes them straight to what they came for and puts it in their own terms, with the passage it came from sitting beside it.

Nothing has to be taken on trust, because the source is right there to check. Readers who would never have opened it get what they needed without losing the styling, the rapport and the craft that went into the original. For the team that publishes it, the report has started to answer for itself.

The answers were always in the report; the work was getting them out.
